What is Projection
Projection is a psychological phenomenon wherein individuals ascribe their own thoughts and feelings to others. For instance, a person who is feeling self-critical may believe that others are judging them harshly, whether consciously or unconsciously. This concept was introduced to psychology by Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), who adapted the term “projection” from neurology, where it described the ability of neurons to relay signals across different levels of the nervous system.
